Barry Van Dusen Workshop: Nature Art in Field and Studio

A workshop with Mass Audubon Artist-in- Residence Barry Van Dusen

This one day workshop will focus on Barry’s current residency with the Massachusetts Audubon Society. For the past three years, Barry has been travelling around Massachusetts, creating paintings and drawings at Mass Audubon wildlife sanctuaries. Barry will show a selection of the more than 170 watercolors he has produced for the project and share his residency sketchbooks. You’ll learn about how the artist uses optics in the field, and how he organizes his art materials for efficient fieldwork. He’ll discuss the approaches he uses to create artwork on location and in his studio. Barry will lead students through basic drawing, tone and color exercises to help them get started with creating their own record of outdoor observations.

Level:  Beginner/Intermediate, with prior experience drawing and painting.

Artist Biography
Barry W. Van Dusen is an internationally recognized wildlife artist living in central Massachusetts, USA.  Barry has illustrated many publications for the Massachusetts Audubon Society, and his bird illustrations have appeared in books published by the American Birding Association, HarperCollins, Princeton University Press and Cornell University (Comstock).  His paintings have been featured in Bird Watcher’s Digest, Birder’s World, Birds Illustrated (U.K.), Wildlife Art and Yankee magazines.

At the invitation of the Artists for Nature Foundation, Barry has traveled to Spain, England, Ireland, India, Peru and Israel, working alongside other wildlife artists to raise money for conservation of threatened habitats.  

In 2014, Barry was named Master Artist at the annual BIRDS IN ART show (Wausau, Wisconsin) – an award which recognizes artists who have shown “outstanding achievement in using bird imagery in their artwork”.  Previous recipients of the award include Roger Tory Peterson and Robert Bateman.

In recent years Barry has been Artist-in-Residence at Fruitlands Museum (Harvard, MA), Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (Boothbay, ME) and Tower Hill Botanic Garden (Boylston, MA).  He has recently completed a two-year residency for The Massachusetts Audubon Society, visiting and painting at all of Mass Audubon’s sanctuaries throughout Massachusetts. The premier exhibition of his residency work was on display at Mass Audubon’s Museum of American Bird Art in Canton, MA, in Summer 2017.
